Here are a few notes that spring to mind of my 8 days in Odessa (the ones for public consumtion that is [wink.gif] )

  • A cultural evening at the Odessa Opera House to see The Nut-cracker Suite ballet - a very fine building indeed, stunning on the inside as you can see from my pictures.
  • Vita cooked a small rabbit (my choice) purchased from the Privost market and having it for at least 3 meals!
  • Sampling a strange soft drink called KBAC [tonque.gif]
  • Getting a strong liking for the very genuine taste of red wines from the Crimea region
  • Going to the Uspensky Monastery and happening to see a very holy man who performs cures (a rare sight apparently)
  • Eating a kilo of strawberries and cherries between us (also from local farmers at the big market)
  • Looking at rather clever trained dolphins performing at the dolphinarium
  • A 45 minute boat ride taking in another viewpoint of the city
  • Walking a lot, to and from our flat hired out for the week in the very centre of Odessa
  • Hot sweaty tram rides to the beach!

Some pictures - sorry not up to great standards as they are either from iPhone or screen-grabs from video footage:

Les,
Very nice photos.

My only comment / question is about the KBAC, did you actually manage to drink it?

I have tried it and as far as I am concerned the one attempt was enough to last me for ten lifetimes.

The one and only attempt was when my one of the guys in my crew (when I was working in Sakhalin) bought some and I tried a mouthful, all that I will say about that experience is not again in this or the next one hundred lifetimes.

Maybe it varies a lot - it was not THAT bad [happy.gif] ...some 'home made stuff' we found someone selling outside the Monastery I didn't like much. The shop bought stuff was alright actually [surprised.gif] . Apparently its made by soaking brown bread (maybe rye) in water with a bit of yeast and waiting until it starts fermenting. The home made stuff tasted of yeast.

I actually brought a bottle back for a laugh. You are only allowed to bring out of the country two bottles of wine and when they saw on the scanner three bottles - they made me open my bag - I'm sure they were disappointed at finding KBAC instead of a third wine bottle...they probably would have confiscated it and had it that evening :D !

Les,

To each their own. One man's meat, one man's poison.

As far as KVAC Image goes, in Yuzhno-Sakhalin there is a small kiosk that sells KVAC (in the summer), I make it a point of crossing the road every time we walk by the kiosk (even in the winter), Alla makes it point of going out of her way to pass by the kiosk.

Enjoy your KBAC and who knows maybe Vita will also get you to eat Сало in the winter.

Yes, I avoided that temptation last October, however I should add that my mother was from the extreme north west of Italy, and there they have a regional specialty called 'lardo di Arnad' - it is cut extremely thinly and served on dark bread. Although I had reservations at first, when I did taste it, I loved it :D

P.S. (I'm sure the Italian variety tastes better but don't tell Vita that [embarrased.gif] )

cheers
Les.

Well, then I guess that, this has put the kibosh on Vita joining our little happy community.

Actually I hope not [biggrin.gif]
