I was there around 1998 or 9. I stayed in a nice hotel that was reasonable but I have no idea what the name was. It was a nice city. Hopefully Moby can come to the rescue.

Thanks Ray ;)

Hi Link..

I've courted a lass from the region ( Novorossiysk) and landed at Krasnodar Airport (several times) and Anapa (1 time) ..

Lots of folk living in my old stomping ground ( Cyprus) hailed from this region - we had direct flight from Cyprus to Krasnodar ( flight only two hours!)

I covered the area by car extensively.. I was interested in the History of the region and Novorossiysk was one of the 'Hero Cities' from the Great Patriotic war

I haven't been their since 2005 ... Met loads of folks who were of Hellenic ( Greek) ethnicity and there were loads of Caucasus ( and Georgian ) restaurants... I wonder what happened to THEM...?

I explored a lot of the Black Sea coast from near the UA border ( close to where Sparky's Wife is from ) down towards Sochi

Krasnodar is situated on a plateau - high up in foothills of the Caucasus Mountains.. it is a city of approx 750K and has VERY diverse cultural make-up.

It's history is very interesting as has a Cossack heritage and many folk weren't too upset ant being occupied by the Nazis.. :o

Some useful links:

If you're going there.. I hope the airport has had an upgrade... ( esp bearing in mind the forthcoming 2014 Winter Olympics at Sochi and the Football World cup coming after that ). The 'International' tag seemed a huge joke to me as one entered from the plane to a tiny hall and exited by pushing ( or being pushed) through a tiny door into 'immigration'.... ( having collected one's case from a shed ! )

If you have specific Q's - please ask ...

Bad advice can be a real pain. About the only real advice that I can every remember listening to and doing something different than I intended came from BC and following it likely cost me a lot of gried and thousands of dollars but I always took into account that the intention of the advice was good.

As far as the info Moby posted in this thread there isn't anything that could cost anyone anything or anything that could cause anyone problems but I am sorry to hear you got bad advice.

I will add that having been to Krasnodar once a long time ago everything Moby said appears to be accurate to me.

Having also been extensively around the Krasnodar area i also can confirm what Moby has written is correct and yes i can confirm the airport is undergoing a massive update :)

1 piece of information that was not so correct does not mean that all information is bad, like anything on the internet you need to research you should look in many different places not just rely on 1 site [read.gif]
