Gladiators.

I fully agree that the gladiators as depicted by Hollywood wear armour.

But real gladiators fought quite often to the death and some wore wore minimal armour, at least as shown in mosaics dated from the time that gladiators actually fought.

Part of the Zliten mosaic from Libya (Leptis Magna), circa 80-100 CE. It shows (left to right) a thraex[u] fighting a [u]murmillo, a hoplomachus standing with another murmillo (who is signaling his defeat to the referee), and one of a matched pair.

Mosaic at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid showing a retiarius named Kalendio (shown surrendering in the upper section) fighting a secutor named Astyanax. The Ø sign by Kalendio's name implies he was killed after surrendering.

A historically accurate re-enactment of a combat between a thraex and murmillo in the Carnuntum Roman ruins. A contemporary inscription credits Carnuntum with having the fourth largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire.

Gladiators fought each other with real weapons in order to survive, now as "romantic" as it sounds calling any sportsman today a "Gladiator" is silly and that is because these days fights to the death are frowned upon.

I do though wonder how long a padded boy would survive on a Rugby field which is a similar type of game but played played by men.

Well, they don't fight to the death of course but are the closest thing to modern day gladiators we have.

There is no other sport with better and stronger athletes.

Sorry Don

But as I said to Jinx the use of that name is not permitted in our board.

As about emphasising your comments made no difference in the meaning.

Anyway is been changed back. Sorry.

If 'Soccer' is so boring how come the whole world wants to play and watch it?

If 'American Football' was so exciting how come nobody else plays it?
