I think the answer to this question is often one where we are influenced by our significant other and the country she comes from. But, if you had to recommend what country to visit from a purely tourist perspective, which one would you recommend?

For me, I would say Ukraine, despite (maybe because of) the fact that I have only been there twice. The reason why I say this is due to the fact that Kyiv far surpassed my expectations and I find it a little more easy to manage than Moscow or St. Petersburg as it seemed to be very walkable in the tourist areas. The Crimea offers you both history and some natural beauty. The beaches of Odessa gives a person a little bite of a resort feel. Lastly, western Ukraine has a nice old Europe feel, sprinkled in with some Soviet period ugliness. Another intangible is the fact that it's size is much more manageable than Russia.

What do other people think?

From a sheer tourist point of view a visit to Ukraine it's much easier for me and I have managed to visit the country and travel around, for business and pleasure.....several time.

Visiting Lviv and the environs was my favourite place, just reminds me to continue my TR, but I have also visited not only Kiev but Odessa and the Crimea peninsular, which is very interesting.

I agree with you that Ukraine it's much easier to go around and has plenty of interesting and historical places to visit and of course getting there it's easy, NO Visa and registration.

On the other hand Russia is a huge country and does have too many interesting places to visit but the visa requirement and the registration puts people like me with family ties.....off.

Having visited both countries several times, I think like you that Ukrainian's are more westernise than the Russians and take sometime to get used to Russian attitudes of "good service" [sad.gif]

It is shame that Russia is so difficult and expensive to visit, because I am sure if no visa was required and also the anachronistic registration with OVIR for sure Russia would receive millions of people yearly.

Now the places the western visitors go are Moscow and St Petersburg, which is a pity.

As a country, I find Ukraine much better as a whole.

With 1 exception though, St. Petersburg (Russia) is a jewel !!! I love that place.

Paris the city of Romance?

Forget it, St. Petersburg has it beat hands down especially Nevsky Prospekt!
