The men who crashed the world

A four-part investigation into a world of greed and recklessness that led to financial collapse.

In the first episode of Meltdown, we hear about four men who brought down the global economy: a billionaire mortgage-seller who fooled millions; a high-rolling banker with a fatal weakness; a ferocious Wall Street predator; and the power behind the throne.

The crash of September 2008 brought the largest bankruptcies in world history, pushing more than 30 million people into unemployment and bringing many countries to the edge of insolvency. Wall Street turned back the clock to 1929.

But how did it all go so wrong?

Lack of government regulation; easy lending in the US housing market meant anyone could qualify for a home loan with no government regulations in place.

Also, London was competing with New York as the banking capital of the world. Gordon Brown, the British finance minister at the time, introduced 'light touch regulation' - giving bankers a free hand in the marketplace.

All this, and with key players making the wrong financial decisions, saw the world's biggest financial collapse.

Part 3

Part 4

Just not to forget the history!

Hi Turbo

Nice to see you keeping an eye to the sleeping board...... which from time to time, when I come across some interesting articles or video, I continue posting them here and the same applies for Luckspin.......otherwise life will become boring. [wink.gif]

I read your previous post but was rather busy and forgot to post any reply. I am sorry for my mistake. I hope everything continue to be fine over there.

Well you have elections over there and we have a referendum next Thursday......which is keeping us busy.....

Best regards to other half and glad you enjoyed baboushka's visit!

Hi Wiz,

Yes, the visit from my MIL was very nice. She is a nice lady and I always enjoy it when she visits. My wife plans to visit home this fall assuming the new 4 legged addition to our family will be willing to part with her for a month or so.

Our elections are getting closer and to me it is a sad state of affairs to have the choice we do. I think your referendum shocked a lot of people and I hope they don't regret the choices they made.

Hi Turbo

Nice to hear from you again.

Yes we are going through interesting and dangerous times as we don't know what is going to happen next day.

I have debated many different subjects on Manny's place and stayed out of your elections, because whoever wins, will be the choice of the secret elite that is running your country, the banksters and not the choice of the people.

Over here in the UK, many factors contributed to the decision to get out of the European Union and the major one is the Austerity measures that have reduce the quality of life for the normal people. Cameron when he offered the referendum to improve his chances during the last elections, he did not expected that he will have to fulfill his promise.

Now, again he made another mistake and the people voted OUT of the EU.... because they are fed up taken for a ride.

As soon as we have a new leader for the conservatives... things will get back to normal and very soon, a new trading agreement will be signed with the EU, if they are still one unit. The EU needs the UK more than we need them... because we import over $100 bill more than we export there, so I am sure they need our money for their trading profits, as the UK is the biggest customer.

Keep an eye on Manny's BREXIT thread......

That is all for now. Mrs can't take a holiday at the moment, maybe in october....so we are stuck in the raining England!

Regards to the other half and the dog.....

I am not too sure I would agree with whoever wins will be the choice of the secret elite at least on the Republican side. I think the secret elite would have preferred anyone other than Trump but of course the way it looks at the moment he isn't going to win so the election may well be that wanted by the secret elite. Things can change fast but as much as I don't like Obama I would rather see him in for a third term than whichever we get.

I will try and check out the Brexit thread. I usually don't pay much attention to the political threads (of course there isn't much else to read these days) but will try and take a look at that one.

I don't see Brexit as any kind of disaster. I think in the long run it will likely be better.
